Quectel Launches Three MediaTek Genio Smart Modules with 7.2-10.5 TOPS NPU
Quectel introduces three MediaTek Genio-based smart modules — SH503FM, SH603FC and SH803FD — spanning entry to high-performance tiers with 7.2-10.5 TOPS NPUs and support for both Android 15 and Yocto Linux, giving industrial tablet, edge AI gateway and robotics customers a complete upgrade path.
Quectel has introduced three smart modules built on MediaTek's Genio platform — the SH503FM, SH603FC and SH803FD — announced during Embedded World North America. All three share a common architecture: an octa-core Arm Cortex-A78 plus Cortex-A55 CPU complex, an Arm Mali-G57 MC2 GPU, support for up to 16GB of LPDDR5X memory, and NPU performance spanning 7.2, 10.3 and 10.5 TOPS. Android 15 and Yocto Linux (Kernel 6.6) are supported across the family. Notably, none of the three integrates cellular connectivity; Quectel leaves the connectivity decision to the customer.
Three compute tiers, three clear targets
According to Quectel's announcement, the modules form a single family spanning entry, mid and high-performance tiers:
- SH503FM — built on the Genio G420 (MT8371LV) platform with an NPU rated at up to 7.2 TOPS and a single-ISP camera pipeline handling 16MP@30fps capture and 4K@60fps playback. Quectel positions it as the family's mid-tier module for single-camera edge AI workloads: POS systems, handheld terminals, smart home panels and HMI, where voice recognition or basic object detection adds value. Offered as SH503FM-WF or SH503FM-AP.
- SH603FC — based on the Genio G520 (MT8371) with up to 10.3 TOPS, up to 16MP@30fps camera input and 4K@60fps video recording and playback. Interfaces include 5× USB 3.0/2.0, 8× I2C, 5× SPI, RGMII and PCIe. Available with Wi-Fi 6E plus Bluetooth 5.4, or Wi-Fi 6 plus Bluetooth 5.0, in SH603FC-WF and SH603FC-AP variants. Target designs: industrial smart tablets, edge computing boxes, smart cash registers and digital signage.
- SH803FD — the top of the range, built on Genio G720 (MT8391) with up to 10.5 TOPS. It adds a dual-ISP pipeline supporting 16MP+16MP@30fps capture, 4K@60fps decode and 4K@30fps encode, plus PCIe 2.0, USB 3.2 and SD 3.0. Intended for multi-camera edge computing, industrial rugged tablets, robotics and generative AI workloads such as on-device meeting summarisation and lightweight local language models.
The modules use an LCC package measuring roughly 43 × 44 × 2.9mm and are specified for an operating temperature range of -35°C to +75°C (package and thermal figures per authorised distributor documentation).
Why architectural consistency matters more than peak TOPS
Set side by side, the specification tables differ mainly in clock speed, memory bandwidth, camera pipeline count and high-speed interface density. Everything that shapes a software roadmap is identical: the same octa-core A78 + A55 arrangement, the same Mali-G57 MC2 GPU, the same 16GB LPDDR5X ceiling, dual independent display output over MIPI (LVDS), eDP or DP, and the same Android 15 / Yocto Linux support.
For engineering teams this means hardware layout, BSP, drivers and middleware developed for the lower tier largely carry upward. Raymond Wang, Quectel's smart module product lead, framed it as giving customers a platform that scales "from a simple connected display all the way to demanding edge AI applications," removing the need to redesign the architecture each time requirements change.
No cellular: a deliberate trade-off, not a gap
None of the three modules integrates cellular connectivity. Quectel presents this as a design choice that gives customers freedom to pick the connectivity that fits, while streamlining cost and certification requirements. For indoor devices built around Wi-Fi and wired Ethernet — industrial tablets, digital signage, smart home panels — dropping the cellular chain removes an RF front end and an operator certification cycle. Where wide-area connectivity is genuinely needed, an edge gateway can pair the module with a standalone 4G/5G module instead of paying for capability it will not use.
Applications Quectel lists for the family
- Industrial smart tablets, rugged industrial tablets, edge computing boxes and edge AI gateways
- Smart intercom and recording devices, companion smart displays, digital signage
- Vending machines, logistics lockers, smart POS terminals and cash registers
- Robotics including service robots and AMRs, aftermarket in-vehicle infotainment, smart home systems
All three modules carry commercial and industrial grade certifications, and Quectel states a long-term supply commitment.
HSY Perspective
For customers working on industrial tablets, edge AI gateways, robotics or POS and signage platforms, the headline here is not "10.5 TOPS" — it is a single migration path across three compute tiers. Because the architecture is shared, the upfront spend on board design, BSP bring-up and middleware adaptation survives an upgrade to a higher tier. That matters most to teams with tight production schedules and limited headcount.
The second point worth raising in a selection review is the absence of cellular. It reads as a subtraction, but it hands BOM and certification decisions back to the customer: indoor products can standardise on Wi-Fi and Ethernet, while gateways that need wide-area links add a cellular module separately. As an authorised Quectel distributor, HSY can supply modules and connectivity options through one supply chain, which reduces the lead-time and certification coordination overhead that multiple vendors introduce.
Our selection guidance: for single-camera light inference — voice, basic detection, panel HMI — start with the SH503FM. For industrial tablets, edge boxes and signage that need stronger multimedia and interface density, the SH603FC at 10.3 TOPS with dual independent display is the balanced choice. For multi-camera video analytics, robot control or on-device small language models, move up to the SH803FD. All three offer Wi-Fi variants, and the SH603FC additionally offers a pure application-processor version for designs with their own connectivity.

We can also help assess thermal design, mechanical fit within the roughly 43 × 44 × 2.9mm LCC footprint and behaviour across the -35°C to +75°C operating range, and prepare the documentation needed to move from selection to design-in.
