Nationz N32H47x/N32H48x MCUs have obtained SGS-issued IEC 61508 SIL 2 (SC3) hardware certification, forming a hardware-plus-software safety package with the SIL 3-certified STL test library — enabling functional-safety design-ins for industrial SIS, energy storage and power applications.

Shenzhen, 17 September 2026 — Nationz Technologies announced that its N32H47x/N32H48x series MCUs have received the IEC 61508 SIL 2 (SC3) functional safety certificate from SGS. The certificate covers the MCU hardware device itself. Together with the SIL 3 certificate previously awarded to the associated software test library (STL), the series now carries a dual certification — a certified software safety component paired with a certified hardware device. For industrial safety and digital energy customers, the value is not an extra badge on a datasheet but a shift of functional safety workload from the equipment vendor back to the silicon supplier.

What the certificate covers

According to the SGS certificate, the certified product is the N32H47x/N32H48x series of microcontrollers, meeting IEC 61508 at Safety Integrity Level 2 with Systematic Capability rated at SC3. Nationz stresses that the assessment spanned the full lifecycle — design, development, production and maintenance — all of which passed functional safety review.

At the hardware level, the key safety parameters were verified by SGS as an independent third party, including:

  • Random hardware failure metrics tied to device failure rate
  • DFMEA failure analysis
  • FIT failure rate
  • Diagnostic Coverage (DC)
  • Safe Failure Fraction (SFF)

These are precisely the figures downstream designers find hardest to derive and hardest to substantiate on their own.

Reading SIL and SC3 correctly

IEC 61508 is the foundational international standard for the functional safety of electrical, electronic and programmable electronic systems. It governs not whether a function works, but whether the system can adequately reduce failure risk across its lifecycle — development process, verification measures and documentation included. SIL (Safety Integrity Level) quantifies the reliability required of a safety function, graded 1 to 4, with higher levels generally implying more severe consequences of failure, whether injury or major equipment loss.

Systematic Capability is a separate axis, measuring a device's resilience to systematic failures, also graded 1 to 4. Under the conventional mapping in IEC 61508-2, a SIL 2 application calls for systematic capability of at least SC2, while SIL 3 calls for SC3. Here the hardware is certified at SIL 2 with SC3 capability — the hardware integrity metrics satisfy SIL 2 while systematic capability sits one level above what that tier requires, leaving headroom for designs building SIL 2 safety functions.

How the dual certification came together

The software side came first. On 5 May 2026, at SEMICON Southeast Asia 2026, SGS presented Nationz with an IEC 61508 SIL 3 (SC3) certificate for the N32H47x_48x Software Test Library — the test library developed alongside the MCU hardware. The SGS functional safety team evaluated the library's safety concept, requirements specification, software architecture, development process, verification and validation activities, and documentation set against IEC 61508-1/-3:2010.

The 17 September certificate covers the hardware device at SIL 2. Together they mean customers are no longer buying a "bare" high-reliability MCU, but a software-plus-hardware safety component set that has been independently reviewed.

Architecture and target applications

The N32H47x/N32H48x series is based on a high-performance Arm Cortex-M4 core running at up to 240MHz, offered in package options from 32 to 144 pins and Flash configurations from 256KB to 1024KB. The devices use a single-channel hardware architecture, and when combined with the runtime STL software test library they perform real-time fault diagnosis of the core and memory; on detecting a random hardware failure, the MCU triggers a safety response and transitions to a safe state.

Nationz lists the following application areas:

  • Industrial servo drives and PLC controllers
  • PV inverters, energy storage BMS and UPS power supplies
  • Automation and control for construction machinery
  • Industrial safety instrumented systems (SIS) and other applications with hard functional safety requirements

Nationz adds that it will continue to expand functional safety capabilities across its Cortex-M4/M7 high-performance MCU lines and grow its portfolio of IEC 61508-qualified parts.

HSY Perspective

Functional safety certification is not a bonus in industrial and safety-critical projects — it is the entry ticket. In the past, what stalled domestic MCUs in energy storage BMS, PV inverter and industrial servo projects was rarely compute or price; it was the customer's safety engineer asking whether FIT and DC figures had third-party verification. With the SGS hardware SIL 2 certificate in hand, that question now has an answer you can cite directly.

The practical impact shows up in effort and schedule. Equipment manufacturers can reference the certified safety documentation set directly instead of performing complex failure assessment of the MCU hardware themselves, which reduces the workload, staffing and timeline of an end-product IEC 61508 certification. And because the certification path runs through a single-channel hardware architecture plus runtime STL diagnostics, customers can build a SIL 2-compliant safety system at a more favourable BOM cost rather than jumping straight to an expensive redundant-channel solution.

On selection: if your project sits in energy storage BMS, PV inverters, UPS, industrial servo or PLC control — anywhere you must produce a functional safety evidence chain — the N32H47x/N32H48x belongs on the first shortlist, especially in configurations pairing 240MHz operation with larger 512KB or 1024KB Flash. As an authorised Nationz distributor, HSY can supply samples, the safety documentation associated with the STL software test library, and selection support, so the dual certification translates into less rework during end-product certification.
